SUMMARY:Professionalism and Ethics: Closing the Year with Integrity
DESCRIPTION:Pelican Center for Children and Families\nIn law school\, you learned the principle of talem qualem —“take your victim as you find them.” Known as the “eggshell skull” rule\, this doctrine holds defendants fully accountable for harm\, even when the plaintiff has pre-existing vulnerabilities. But have you ever considered that\, as an attorney\, you also “take your clients as you find them”? \nThe Rules of Professional Conduct make it clear: when representing a client with diminished capacity\, you are ethically obligated—so far as reasonably possible—to maintain a standard attorney-client relationship. But what exactly constitutes diminished capacity? What professional and ethical responsibilities come into play when your client’s decision-making ability is impaired? \nThis engaging seminar will explore the answers to these critical questions. Join our experienced presenter for a discussion designed to engage attorneys seeking to navigate these complex scenarios with confidence. The program offers practical guidance and a deeper understanding of the rules that govern your role. Strengthen your ethical foundation while enhancing your capacity to advocate with professionalism and integrity. \nQuestions? View the event flyer.

SUMMARY:Special Immigration Juvenile Status
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Court Improvement Program of the Louisiana Supreme Court\nUndocumented children in Child in Need of Care (CINC) proceedings are often eligible for some kind of immigration status. Although there are different types of immigration status that may be available\, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status(SIJS) is by far the most common. SIJS is also the type of immigration status where child welfare stakeholders may have a significant role to play. \nSIJS was created to allow children without lawful immigration status – and without complete parental support – to remain in the United States legally and receive protection from the state. Children with SIJS are eligible to apply for lawful permanent residency\, or a green card. Our speakers will explain SIJS in detail: children who may be eligible\, benefits of SIJS\, the role of the juvenile court in SIJS\, and what a SIJS hearing looks like.
