DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Court Improvement Program of the Louisiana Supreme Court\nUndocumented children in Child in Need of Care (CINC) proceedings are often eligible for some kind of immigration status. Although there are different types of immigration status that may be available\, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status(SIJS) is by far the most common. SIJS is also the type of immigration status where child welfare stakeholders may have a significant role to play. \nSIJS was created to allow children without lawful immigration status – and without complete parental support – to remain in the United States legally and receive protection from the state. Children with SIJS are eligible to apply for lawful permanent residency\, or a green card. Our speakers will explain SIJS in detail: children who may be eligible\, benefits of SIJS\, the role of the juvenile court in SIJS\, and what a SIJS hearing looks like. DESCRIPTION:Join Whole Health Louisiana in our informative sessions about topics relating to the implementation of trauma-informed care. \nYou are a Superhero AND Human: Strategies to prevent and reduce secondary traumatic stress with speaker Stephen Phillippi\, Jr.\, Ph.D.\, LCSW\, CCFC – Center for Evidence to Practice\, LSU School of Public Health \nDr. Stephen Phillippi will address strategies for preventing and reducing secondary traumatic stress among professionals who support others in crisis. It will highlight the balance between being a dedicated “superhero” caregiver and maintaining human well-being while focusing on practical approaches to self-care\, resilience\, and organizational support systems. \nHe received his PhD from LSU\, MSW from Tulane\, and BA from Loyola New Orleans. He is a licensed clinical social worker and clinically certified forensic counselor. He has a thirty-plus-year history of developing\, managing\, evaluating\, and providing direct services. Dr. Phillippi is the principal investigator on several studies\, teaches\, writes\, consults\, and participates in a number of professional and public service boards. He is a full professor with tenure\, teaching both Master’s and PhD students. \nSignificant awards and honors include the 2022 Jim Finks Endowed Chair in Health Promotion; the 2013 National Champion of Change Award from the MacArthur Foundation for reform work in juvenile justice; the 2015 National Association of Social Workers Spotlight Recognition\, that highlights social worker leadership and their contributions to the field; the 2016 National Conference of State Legislatures – National Legislative Research\, Document Award; and the 2018 LSU School of Public Health – Faculty of the Year Award \nDr. Phillippi’s most significant contributions to science to date include identifying needs and gaps in behavioral health and justice systems\, creating policy and practice changes to support research-driven prevention and intervention\, and developing translational methods to grow such programming to scale in a sustainable fashion. DESCRIPTION:The Capital Area Trauma Collaborative is hosting a Trauma Summit in Baton Rouge on November 14.  \nThe summit will bring together service providers who work with trauma-impacted populations but who also may not be immersed in trauma-informed approaches. The purpose of the summit is to align trauma-informed work in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas. Expected outcomes include the establishment of smaller working groups that will be coordinated through the Capital Area Trauma Collaborative\, which will operate as a regional hub for Whole Health Louisiana\, sharing information to and from the Whole Health Louisiana Statewide Lead and the Coalition. \nA primary tenet of Whole Health Louisiana is to enhance existing efforts by raising public awareness\, amplifying evidence-based policies\, sharing data for future decisions\, and supporting the workforce to expand trauma-informed efforts statewide. DESCRIPTION:Join Whole Health Louisiana in our informative sessions about topics relating to the implementation of trauma-informed care. \nStrategies and Actions for Community Resilience in the Gulf: The Community Resilience Center at The Water Institute with speaker Kathryn Keating\, Ph.D. – The Water Institute \nKathryn Sweet Keating\, Ph.D.\, focuses on the intersection between society\, the environment\, and science in her work as a social scientist at The Water Institute. Kathryn received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in addition to a Bachelor of Social Work from Indiana University. She then attended Portland State University where she obtained a Master of Social Work. Kathryn then moved to Louisiana to continue her graduate studies at Louisiana State University where she received both her Master of Arts in Sociology and her Ph.D. in Sociology. Kathryn’s research is deeply rooted in disaster resilience and ecosystem restoration\, and focuses particularly on their impacts on communities. SUMMARY:Taking Action Against Abuse Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council\nEmpowerment and Protection: Increasing Awareness and Action Against Abuse in the IDD Communities for Everyday Life \nTaking Action Against Abuse is an interactive training designed to equip individuals with IDD\, caregivers\, families\, and community partners with the knowledge and skills to recognize\, prevent\, and respond to abuse and neglect. This session will cover the definitions and signs of abuse\, the importance of self-advocacy\, and practical steps for reporting and intervention. Participants will engage in activities\, discussions\, and exercises to strengthen their ability to take protective action. DESCRIPTION:Join Whole Health Louisiana in our informative sessions about topics relating to the implementation of trauma-informed care. \nThe ABCs and 123s of Integrating Trauma-Informed Approaches Into Behavioral Health Settings with speaker Stalanda Butcher\, MPH\, M.Ed. – The Center for Children & Families \nStalanda Butcher\, MPH\, M.Ed.\, is the Chief Advocacy Officer for The Center for Children and Families (The Center). Within her role\, Butcher is responsible for the implementation\, oversight\, and advancement of all advocacy programs and divisions for The Center. These programs and divisions currently include Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Northeast LA\, the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) of Northeast LA\, Brokers of Hope (BOH)\, and the Family Support & Youth Transition Program (FSYT). Butcher’s entire professional career has been paved with programming that supports vulnerable children and families. DESCRIPTION:Join Whole Health Louisiana in our informative sessions about topics relating to the implementation of trauma-informed care. \nLeading With Compassion: How Trauma-Informed Approaches Change the Way We Serve with speaker Secretary David N. Matlock\, JD – Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services \nDavid N. Matlock (JD) was appointed Secretary of the Department of Children and Family Services on January 8\, 2024. Matlock previously served as Chief Judge of the Juvenile Court for Caddo Parish from 1999 until his retirement in June 2023. He was first elected to serve as judge in 1994. Matlock played a pivotal role in moving the court to a trauma-informed care approach\, focused on addressing childhood trauma and mitigating intergenerational trauma. During his tenure\, the juvenile court had the state’s first Juvenile Drug Court\, Family Drug Court\, Juvenile Mental Health Court and Truancy Court. He also saw the development of the state’s first Sex Trafficking Community Response Team and Specialized Victims Intensive Unit. Matlock has been recognized for his commitment to Louisiana’s youth\, including by receiving the Volunteers for Youth Justice Hero of the Year Award in 2019 and Louisiana CASA Judge of the Year in 2005 and 2019. \nRegister for the Lunch n Learn here: bit.ly/WHL_LunchLearn
